Thrift

Thrift is the story of an inadequate teacher who is given the unfortunate responsibility of producing the Christmas production and saving the school from failure. The anonymous narrator has no real interest in making a difference to his students' lives and spends most of his lessons failing to explain classic novels and wishing he was at the local pub. However, for some reason he finds himself in favour with the leaders of the school, and has to take on the additional responsibilities of teaching in front of the media, being observed by OFSTED and creating a play that will be good enough to keep the governors and the local community happy. Rather than do too much work himself, he is more than happy to cheat and lie his way through, hoping that somehow he can do just enough to keep his job, and perhaps even gain himself a thoroughly undeserved promotion.
